OVERVIEW

Kedarkantha is undoubtedly one of the best winter treks in the Himalayas. It is one of the finest summit climbs for beginners. The experience of a summit climb is always special,it will change the way you see the world. Waking up at wee hours, dawn breaking as you climb up the mountain is a breathtaking experience-literally ;). For a long time, wide snow landscapes are all you would see. One-step at a time, up to the ridge where your world widens and finally, the summit where everything else is below you. The feeling on top of a summit is indescribable. There is a sense of achievement; you have earned the spectacular view. The kind of internal confidence you gain after an adventurous summit climb is difficult to shake.

WHY YOU SHOULD GO ON THIS TRIP?

  • Beautiful campsites

This trek has some of the loveliest campsites in Indian Himalayas.

“Juda-Ka-Talab” is a campsite surrounded by forests on one side, you will find after passing the meadows.

“Bhoja Dadi” is a campsite is set on the meadows with pine forests on one side. It gives you shot at soaking in the sunlight on snow-clad Mountains.

“Kedarkantha Base Camp” is a remote camp in the wilderness, close to the Kedarkantha summit. You can observe wonderful sunsets, sitting on one of the rocks by the campsite. These are settings right out of fairy tales.

  • Views from the summit

While the summit climb to Kedarkantha is thrilling, the view from the top is jaw dropping! When you face the north, you have the mighty snow-clad mountain ranges of Uttarakhand - Swargarohini, Black Peak, Bandarpoonch among the Gangotri and Yamunotri ranges. Below you in this direction is the Har ki Dun valley. On your north-west, you see ranges of Himachal Pradesh – that extends into Kinnaur ranges. The Rupin valley makes its way to Himachal on your west. And on your east, you see from where you drove to base camp – Purola, Mori. Views of this scale are incredibly rewarding after an adventurous summit climb.

After an early breakfast, we will set out on the trek. Today’s hike is an uphill climb and moves through the pine forests for most parts. From Sankri, we will walk to Saur village and start climbing upwards until we reach a lake called Juda-ka-Talab. There lies another lake beneath the frozen one and so the name JUDA- KA-TALAB (meaning joint-lakes). In the winters, the frozen lake looks surreal and you can walk over with caution. Overnight stay in tents.

Depending upon the snow conditions, we will take the best route leading to the summit. After reaching the summit, you can see mountains of the Yamunotri, Gangotri and Kinner Kailash ranges. Marvel at the astounding views from the summit and also feel the peace at the Shiva shrine. The Shiva shrine has the statue built only till its neck and hence the name Kedarkantha( Kedar- Shiva; Kantha – Neck). In the olden days, they use to stop construction of a temple if they heard any noises while sculpting the statue. The locals say that the construction of this particular shrine stopped on hearing animal noises.Spend some time to relish your climb up to the summit, after which we will start descending and slide down a few slopes to reach the base camp. Enjoy the night skies and bring in the New Year’s on a high note beneath the Milky Way and the shooting stars. Overnight stay in tents
